Which Shirt Printing Method is Right For You?

Cotton is one of the most versatile and best fabrics to customize. But with a few different methods to choose from, it helps to know which one fits your project.

Direct-to-Garment (DTG)

Best for small quantities, photo-realistic artwork, or designs with a lot of colors. No minimums, no color limits — just upload your art and we handle the rest. Works best on 100% cotton.

Screen Printing

The go-to method for most custom t-shirt orders. Screen printing delivers bold, long-lasting color at a price that gets better the more you order. Best for orders of 6 or more pieces with designs up to 6 colors.

Direct-to-Film (DTF)

DTF transfers work on any color cotton tee with no minimum order. It's a great option for small runs, names and numbers, or designs with a lot of colors. Durable and vibrant, but has a transfer feel.

Why Choose a 100% Cotton T-Shirt?

Cotton Incorporated has called it :The Fabric of Our Lives" for decades. Soft, breathable, and better with every wash — after 35+ years in the business, we think they nailed it. Here's why we love it too.

The Most Breathable Fabric in the World

Nothing will keep you feeling cooler like a cotton t-shirt. Cotton allows air to flow through the material which also allows heat to escape.

Whether you're working outside, running an event, or just wearing a t-shirt on a hot day, cotton keeps you feeling like you're almost naked.

It Does Not Require Special Care

Wash it, Dry it, Dye it. Cotton doesn't require special treatment — no fabric softener, no delicate cycle, no hang dry requirements. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Have stinky people in your life? Get them cotton! It doesn't hold odor the way polyester does, so it comes out of the wash actually smelling clean and looking good.

Good for Your Skin. Better for the Planet

Cotton is a natural fiber, so no synthetic chemicals are in this material. Its breathability is helpful to people with sensitive skin and even eczema.

It is also a renewable resource and biodegradable material, which means it has a lighter carbon footprint than its synthetic counterparts like polyester and rayon.

Decoration Looks Good On It

Customized prints will generally look better on fully cotton products. Colors come out richer, edges come out sharper, and your final result is a clean, high quality print.

Synthetic fibers can sometimes bleed making your print look dirty or discolored. While we will do our best to prevent it, it just is not as consistent as cotton printing is.

What the heck does that mean? Cotton Terms You Need to Know!

The fabric you choose affects how your shirt feels, how long it lasts, and how good your decoration looks.
Here's a plain-English guide to the cotton terms that matter.

Carded/Open-End Cotton

The least expensive way to make cotton thread, carded cotton spins the fibers faster and uses a cheaper prep process. You'll find carded cotton in budget t-shirts that feel a little bit less soft than other tees. The cost savings is perfect when you need a t-shirt on a budget.

Ring Spun Cotton

Not only will ring spun cotton be softer than standard cotton, it is also stronger. The yarn is twisted during spinning which results in a tighter yarn. The cost will be a little bit higher than carded cotton, but the added softness is clear when feeling a ring spun tee.

Combed Cotton

Combed cotton brings carded cotton through one extra step, with the intention of removing short and weak fibers. A combed t-shirt will have a smoother printing surface. You'll also notice less pilling, but not much added softness.

Combed Ring Spun Cotton

A combination of combed cotton and ring spun cotton, these t-shirts have gone through both processes resulting in a strong, softer and smoother t-shirt. They will not only be the softest cotton t-shirts but some of the strongest and best looking after adding custom decoration.

Airlume Cotton

Created for exclusive use by Bella+Canvas, Airlume cotton takes combed ringspun cotton one step further. Their additional purification process is intended to create a smoother, lightweight fabric better for screen printing and direct-to-garment prints.

Organic Cotton

Grown without synthetic pesticides or chemicals, organic cotton is eco-friendly. Organic cotton will feel like carded cotton unless it has gone through the ringspun or combed process. Organic shirts will typically cost around 30% more than carded tees.

Frequently Asked Questions: 100% Cotton T-Shirts

Honest answer: I've personally felt every t-shirt in our showroom, which has over 50 of the most popular cotton styles on the market. Here's my take.

If you want the softest lightweight tee, the Next Level 3600 is hard to beat. It's thinner than most options, which some people mistake for cheap — but it's not. It's just a genuinely lightweight fabric that feels incredibly soft against your skin and keeps you cool. If you run warm or want something that doesn't feel heavy, this is your shirt.

If you want something with a little more substance — less sheer, tighter weave — but still want that top-tier softness, the American Apparel 5389 is my personal favorite for overall softness. It has more body to it than the Next Level but still feels premium from the first wear.

Neither of these is a budget shirt, but if softness is your top priority, they're worth it.

Simply put, ring spun cotton will be softer and smoother feeling than standard carded cotton.

The lighter the thread weight, the lighter the tee. A 3-4oz weight will be super light, but quite thin. The standard weight is around 5oz where at 6oz it is considered heavyweight and will be thicker and warmer.

Short answer: 100% cotton gives you the best screen print results — but not all cotton shirts print the same. The quality of the blank matters more than most people realize.

We tested the same design on six popular 100% cotton shirts — from budget basics to premium blanks — using the same screens, ink, and settings. The difference in results was real and visible. We also tested the same shirt in different fabric blends (100% cotton vs. poly/cotton vs. triblend) to show how fabric content affects the finished print.

Shirts tested included the Gildan 3000, Port & Company PC54, Tultex 202, Bella+Canvas 3001, Stanley/Stella SXU007, and Comfort Colors 1717. See the full results in the video below.
