1-Layer vs. 2-Layer Applique: What is the Difference?

Choosing the right applique style comes down to the look, budget, and vibe you are looking for. Both options deliver a premium, stitched-on finish, but each has its own strengths. Here is a quick breakdown to help you pick the perfect style for your apparel:

1-Layer Applique

Clean, lightweight, and budget-friendly. This technique uses a single piece of fabric sewn onto the garment.

  • Look: Sleek, minimal, bold single-color shapes
  • Weight:Feels lighter and more flexible on the garment
  • Cost: Most economical option
  • Best For: Teams, schools, promo, large block letters
  • Edge Finish: Satin, zigzag, or running stitch
*Great when you want applique styling without the extra bulk or cost.

2-Layer Applique

Dimensional, premium look with color and texture contrast. Adds pop for logos and varsity styling.

  • Look: Outlined, shadowed, or multi-color effect
  • Weight: Slightly heavier with a more substantial feel
  • Cost: Around $3/piece additional
  • Best For: Retail-style, fashion brands or spirit wear
  • Edge Finish: Typically satin or zigzag for a bold border
*Perfect when your design calls for premium detail.
Quick Pick: If your logo uses outlines or layered colors, choose two layers. If your design is simple or you are on a budget for a large group, one layer is the best choice.

Applique Stitch Types

  • Running Stitch:
A running stitch creates a single line by sewing evenly spaced dashed lines. It gives the applique fabric a "raw" edge, so is best used with felt material.
  • Triangle Stitch:
A combination of a running stitch with traditional zig-zag stitch. The running stitch holds the edge down while the zig-zag stitch secures the fabric in place while adding visual interest.
  • Satin Stitch (Additional Cost Applies):
A densely woven stitch creates a high-quality, refined edge look. It secures all types of applique fabrics and minimizes fraying, resulting in a sleek, completed appearance.

Traditonal vs. Reverse Applique: Which Style Fits Your Design?

Learn more about the differences between standard applique and reverse applique and their distinctly unique style.

Example of 1-layer applique
Traditional Applique
  • Fabric is sewn on top of the garment
  • Clean, polished, dimensional look
  • Most budget-friendly applique option
  • Durable finish that holds up over time
  • Works with all material types
Available Stitch Type: Running, Triangle, Satin
Example of 2-layer applique
Reverse Applique
  • Fabric is placed behind the garment and the top layer is lasered away
  • Unique cut-out effect with artistic depth
  • Creates a distressed or vintage appearance
  • Non-finished edge will fray over time
  • Works with most material types
Available Stitch Type: Running
Other Thing to Consider:

Reverse applique is more limited in the fabrics, stitch type and detail. Due to the application process of reverse applique, it will feel heavier and more bulky on the inside.

Frequently Asked Questions about Custom Applique

Applique is a decoration method where a piece of fabric or felt is placed on top of another fabric (typically sweatshirts) and then sewn onto that fabric. Applique fabrics are typically cut with a laser either before the garment is sewn, or after it is sewn via a laser bridge or specical laser that is made to work with commerical embroidery machinery.

The most common applique materials are twill and felt, although almost any fabric can be used. We have used many materials such as velvet, burlap, canvas, costume material and so many more.

Because we are adding an additonal layer to your shirt, applique has a little bit of a heavier feel than other apparel decoration methods. For comfort when wearing, we recommend avoiding any lightweight garments. Heavyweight t-shirts or any type of sweatshirt including crewnecks, hoodies and 1/4 zips will give you the best result with the most comfort.

Applique is sewn on your garment, much like standard embroidery, so it offers high durability that should withstand hundreds of washes. Applique is washed like any other item, no special care or instructions are needed. You can even throw your custom applique sweatshirt into the dryer like normal!

We offer one of the lowest minimums for true custom applique at just a 12 piece minimum order. You can mix and match products, but the applique must remain the same on all items including the applique deisgn and material.

Yes! It is common to add standard embroidery to your applique design. This method is cost-effective for pairing with your logo or design. We also can combine screen printing, DTG, DTF and rhinestones with your applique. Some limitations exist, but our team will advise on what will work for your logo.

The final price of your applique product depends on a few factors. It depends on how many you order. It also depends on the type of garment. Lastly, it depends on the number of layers in your design. To give you a rough starting point with costs, we've priced the Gildan Heavy Blend Hoodie below with both screen printing and applique so you can compare the prices.
